Abe Lenstra - Goals in International Matches

The outstanding Dutch player scored 33 international goals in 47 matches for his National Team. He held the Dutch record of goals for the national team from April 23, 1958 (when he surpassed the total of Bep Bakhuys) until November 4, 1959 (when his total was surpassed by Faas Wilkes). Note that prior to the match on October 15, 1958, against Denmark, the Dutch FA (KNVB) had (mistakenly) announced that both Bakhuys and Lenstra had reached 30 international goals, and Lenstra would have to score in that match (which he did) to become the lone all-time topscorer (which he already had been for nearly half a year...).

His national team career is the longest in the history of the Dutch national team.

All matches are friendlies unless stated otherwise.

Kick Smit, Faas Wilkes and Abe Lenstra gave rise to the perfect cartoon football player Kick Wilstra.

Together with Kees Rijvers and Faas Wilkes, Abe Lenstra formed the gouden binnentrio, three inside forwards of international class during a time Dutch football was mired in mediocrity due to the refusal of the authorities to admit professionalism.
