[*] this win against West Germany, the so-called "Wunder von Córdoba",
obtained mythical status in Austrian football history; while it was
the first win by Austria in a World Cup tournament against their
unloved neighbours ("Piefkes"), after distressing losses in 1934
and 1954, it is usually forgotten that the match was of very limited
interest: Austria had already been eliminated, and while West Germany
would have reached the third place match in case of a draw, their
chances to defend their 1974 title were more than remote: they
needed a draw in the parallel match between the Netherlands and
Italy (which didn't happen) coupled with a 5-goal win against Austria
    to reach the final
[!] this match entered World Cup history as the "Schande von Gijón";
most blame should go to FIFA as in spite of the obvious lessons from
the previous World Cup in Argentina, where the hosts had known the
exact number of goals to score against Peru in order to reach the final
because Brazil's match against Poland had already finished before they
started, FIFA had not enforced the final group matches to be played
simultaneously; because of this, Algeria, who had earlier beaten West
Germany 2-1 in one of the all-time World Cup upsets, and had beaten
Chile 3-2 (after a 3-0 lead at half-time which would have all but
mathematically ensured their passage had they managed to hold on to it)
just prior to this match, became the victims of the arrangement struck
after West Germany took an early lead (after 11 minutes); because a
victory by the West Germans by 1 or 2 goals guaranteed both teams a
place in the next round, the twenty-two actors took very great care
not to create any real scoring opportunities after about half an hour
of play (only Schachner claims not to have understood during the match
what was going on - he must have been the only one on the planet)
