Copa América 2001

Date: July 12-29.
Hosts: Colombia.

On June 28, two weeks before the start of the tournament, CSF decided to
take the hosting right away from Colombia following the kidnapping of
the vice-president of the Colombian FA (who was released within hours
after the decision to move the tournament was announced). Candidates
to hold the tournament instead were Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico.

On June 30, it was decided to hold the tournament in Colombia after all,
but postpone it by a year to 2002 (no specific date was settled).

On July 5 CSF announced that the tournament will go ahead as planned;
apparently under great pressure of TV companies.

Argentina decided to pull out having sent players and coaches on holiday,
but later announced they might reconsider; they announced their final
decision to pull out on July 10, one day before the start of the tournament.

Canada pulled out, not being able to collect their squad anymore, and
were replaced by Costa Rica on July 6. Argentina were replaced by
Honduras on July 10.
(CSF's preferred order of further replacements would have been: USA,
El Salvador, Japan and South Korea; inviting the geographically more
suitable countries of Surinam and Guyana (or even Panama) apparently
was never an option.)

Venues: Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Manizales, Arménia and Pereira.
Bucaramanga and Ibagué were not included.

Originally the competition was to include 16 teams (with as invited teams:
Japan, South Korea, Portugal, Spain, Mexico and USA), but in the end it
was decided to invite only 2 teams (Mexico and Canada) for a 12-team
competition. (Jamaica were also mentioned as invitees at times.)
