Cup of the Alps

Initiated in 1960 as a competition between league selections; club teams entered in 1962. From 1962 until 1966 only Italian and Swiss teams played, in 1967 and 1968 teams from West Germany also entered (and won). From 1972 until 1987 only French and Swiss teams played in this tournament.

The tournament was discontinued in 1987.

From 1988 to 1993 the Memorial Pier Cesare Baretti, also known as Torneo di Saint Vincent, Val d'Aosta, was played. It is sometimes seen as a successor of the Cup of the Alps, though participation was no longer restricted to club teams from the relevant nations. Of course, also the earlier tournament, won by clubs from Bretagne, Campania and the Ruhrgebiet, hardly deserved to make reference to the Alps.

Not to be confused with the wartime Alpenpokal played between Austrian and Bavarian clubs.
