Final Tables Argentina Second Level 1935-2006/2007
Previous history
The first championship of football played in Argentina was held in 1891 and was organized by the Argentine Association Football League.
Excepting a year without competition (1892), the championships were played regularly since 1893. There isn't a Second Level to 1899,
when the "Segunda División" (Second Division) was created. The new division not promoted teams to the First Level in the early years,
and the Champion continued playing in the Second Level. Banfield, which competed in the First Level in 1898, joined the new division
by its own decision, and was the first champion of this category. In these years it was usual that the First Level clubs played in the
Second Level with their "second teams" (reserves).
Segunda División champions:
1899 Banfield
1900 Banfield
1901 Barracas Athletic
1902 Belgrano Athletic "B" (second team)
1903 Barracas Athletic "B" (second team)
1904 Barracas Athletic "B" (second team)
1905 América
1906 Estudiantes "B" (second team)
Since 1907 champions were promoted to the First Level.
1907 Nacional
1908 River Plate
1909 Gimnasia y Esgrima
1910 Racing Club
In 1911 the Second Level division was renamed as "Intermedia". The division named "Segunda Division" becomes
a third Level tournament.
Intermedia champions:
1911 Estudiantes de La Plata
In 1912 the Association split up and the Argentinian football was divided in two separate leagues named Asociación
Argentina de Football and Federación Argentina de Football. Both of them had their respective second level tournaments.
1912 (Asoc) Ferro Carril Oeste
1912 (Fed.) Tigre
1913 (Asoc) Huracán
1913 (Fed.) Floresta
1914 (Asoc) Honor y Patria - not promoted-(*)
1914 (Fed.) Defensores de Belgrano
(*) Honor y Patria wasn't promoted due to the Association changed its "promotion rules" and was necessary a match
between the champions of the second and third Level. Honor y Patria played against San Lorenzo de Almagro, the
Second Division (Third Level) champions, and lost by 0-3. San Lorenzo was promoted to the First Level.
In 1915 both associations merged. All the teams from the Federación moved over to the Asociación.
1915 Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata
1916 Sportivo Barracas
1917 Defensores de Belgrano
1918 Eureka
In 1919 a new split happened. A new League was created and named Asociación Amateurs de Football.
The Asociación Argentina de Football kept their name and was the only recognized by FIFA.
1919 (Asoc.) Banfield
1919 (Amat) Barracas Central
1920 (Asoc.) El Porvenir
1920 (Amat.) General Mitre
1921 (Asoc.) Sportivo Dock Sud and Alvear
1921 (Amat.) Palermo
1922 (Asoc.) Boca Juniors "B" (second team)
1922 (Amat.) Argentino del Sud
1923 (Asoc.) Boca Juniors "B" (second team)
1923 (Amat.) Liberal Argentino
1924 (Asoc.) Chacarita Juniors
1924 (Amat.) Excursionistas
1925 (Asoc.) Sportivo Balcarce
1925 (Amat.) Talleres
1926 (Asoc.) Nacional (Adrogué)
1926 (Amat.) Honor y Patria
In 1927 both Leagues merged and the new association was named Asociación Amateurs Argentina de Football.
The Second Level tournament was denominated Primera División B. The Second Level champions in 1926 weren't
promoted to the First Level due to this merger.
Primera División B champions:
1927 El Porvenir
1928 Colegiales
1929 Honor y Patria
1930 Nueva Chicago
In 1931, 18 clubs left the League and created a new Professional League. The amateur competition continued to 1934,
when the Asociación Argentina de Football was disbanded and all their teams (except those that left the official competition)
joined to the Professional League.
The Professional League was named Liga Argentina de Football to 1934 and Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA)
since that year. There isn't a Professional Second Division until 1934.
The last amateur champions were:
1931 Liberal Argentino
1932 Sportivo Dock Sud
1933 Ramsar Sport Club
1934 Bella Vista
In 1934 a professional Second Level was created. This tournament wasn't promotional to the First Level.

To make the Second Level more competitive AFA resolved to relegate several clubs,
(including all the teams from Rosario and those from Buenos Aires considered "low-competitive" or without "suitable fields")
to the Third Level for the 1950 season. For this reason, along with Excursionistas, relegated due to finished in last place,
another eight teams were relegated to the Third Level.
Only 12 teams stayed in Primera B for the next season. New Third Level was named Segunda División since 1949.

In 1985 AFA modified the structure of its competitions. Primera B was replaced for a new Second Level division named Primera B Nacional.
Clubs belonging to Regional Leagues were incorporated with "effective" places (until then they only had competed on First Level National
Championships, as "invited" teams but they didn't take part on the regular seasons, with a few exceptions (three teams from Córdoba).
The season calendar was changed from the "calendar year" to the "European calendar".
It starts with the First Level tournament for the 1985/86 season. In between, the Second Level clubs (and the lower levels too) played
a tournament named "Apertura" to decide the eight teams that would play in the new division, and ten teams to compete in the new Third Level
named Primera B Metropolitana (only to directly affiliated teams).
