The Challenge Shield was first presented in September 1896 and played for in 1897. Note that the Hongkong FA only recognises trophy winners since its own reconstruction in 1945.
It is the first major knock-out tournament in the Hongkong football season; currently the winners play off against the FA Cup winners for a place in the Asian Cup Winners' Cup.
