Games of the III. Olympiad

Football Tournament

(St. Louis, USA, 1st July - 23rd November, 1904)

Three teams entered the football tournament, two from the host city Saint Louis and one from Ontario, Canada. Originally two other Canadian teams (also both from Ontario) had expressed interest, the Berlin Rangers (who soon withdrew citing financial problems) and the University of Toronto, who withdrew after losing 0-2 to Galt FC on November 5th in a regional competition in Ontario.

The visitors won both matches and were awarded first place. Gold medals were not awarded at the time, but the IOC later awarded Canada a gold medal for Galt FC's win in the football tournament. To determine second place, the two teams from St. Louis needed a replay. In between these two matches, on 20th and 23rd November, the two clubs played another goalless draw, on 21st November, but that match was not part of the Olympic tournament; it only counted for the Christian League, to which both teams belonged, and is therefore omitted here.
