Introduced in 1979 to give departmental selections excluded from the national championship a nationwide competition, called Inter Departmental Championship. Due to infighting within the PFF the 2nd edition only took place in 1984, and was rebaptised Inter Provincial Championship. The four provincial teams were admitted but not considered for the final ranking. The same held for the 1986 tournament. Only since 1990 has the tournament been held regularly, albeit under frequent name changes.
