Sendings-off


There had been 170 sendings off in the history of the Copa América, 127 since the
introduction of the red card. The first player sent off in history was Juan Emilio
Píriz from Uruguay against Chile in 1937, the last one Gerardo Torrado from Mexico
against Colombia in 2001. Eight players have been sent off twice: Schubert
Gambetta (URU - 1945), Hernán Gómez (CHI - 1987), Luis Perea (COL - 1987 & 1993),
Oscar Ruggeri (ARG - 1989), César Sampaio (BRA - 1993 & 1995), Stalin Rivas (VEN -
1993 & 1995), Denis Caniza (PAR - 2001) and Richard Morales (URU - 2001 & 2004). The
team that had suffered more sent offs is Uruguay (30), followed by Argentina (22),
Peru (22), Brazil (19), Venezuela (18), Chile (15), Bolivia and Paraguay (11),
Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico (9), Honduras and Japan (1). The only two teams
without sendings offs are Costa Rica and USA.
