The WPS is the top division of women's soccer in the United States, and the only fully professional women’s soccer league in the country. The league began play in 2009 with 7 teams. Although budgeted lower than the ill-fated USA, the league’s financial footing is much more solid, and it was able to attract much of the best world talent to take part in its inaugural season. Scoring system: (2009-present): 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw,
and 0 points for a loss.
