Note that in Malaysia the league championship is a very late addition to the football calendar, and its main purpose in the early years of its existence was to qualify teams for the more prestigious and traditional Malaysia Cup.
Until 2001 the top level only contained FA representations, and no club team has as yet won the championship. Each regional FA organised club championships, with that of the FA of Penang won by Penang Ramblers in 1963 (the club also were Penang runners-up in 1964, 1968 and 1972).
