NB: in 1957 and 1958, the Turkish FA (TFF) organised a knock-out
tournament called Federation Cup to establish the Turkish
    participants in the European Cup.
Both editions were won by Beşiktaş, who thereupon entered the
European Cup 1958/59 (but not 1957/58, because TFF did not
register them before the dead-line!). After the 2000/01
season (!), Beşiktaş applied to the TFF to have their
Federation Cup wins accepted as league championships (in order
to get a second star on their uniform - there's one for every
five championships and both Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray had 14
league titles hence two stars at the time, while Beşiktaş were
on 9 and so just the one star). After an initial refusal by
the TFF, Beşiktaş took the matter to UEFA (as UEFA had introduced
rulings after the 1956/57 edition of the European Cup that only
national champions should enter - however, both in 1957/58 and
1958/59 UEFA accepted the Spanish league runners-up as entrants
as Real Madrid won both European Cup and Spanish championship in
    1956/57 and 1957/58).
Eventually, in 2002, the TFF agreed to have listed Beşiktaş as
Turkish champions 1957 and 1958, but not as league champions
(as, of course, there was no national league at the time).
